Valais Blacknose seek people out. They trot to the gate when you appear, lean in for scratches, and stand calmly for handling. Centuries of close-quarters alpine shepherding — and, at our farm, handling from the day they're born — produce a sheep that genuinely wants to be your friend.
That said, they are livestock, not house pets. The families who love them most are the ones who came in with clear eyes about what a small flock needs — and found the care lighter, and the affection greater, than they expected.

An Honest Checklist for Companion Homes
A Flock, Not a Single Sheep
Sheep are deeply social and become stressed alone. We place a minimum of three together — a trio of wethers is the classic companion setup.
Room, Shelter & Safe Fencing
Pasture to graze, a dry shelter from rain and sun, secure fencing, and a predator plan — guardian dogs, llamas, donkeys, or hot-wire.
Routine Care
Shearing twice a year, hoof trims, parasite management, quality hay and sheep minerals, and clean water. It's manageable — but it's real.

- Do Valais Blacknose sheep make good pets?
- Yes — they are widely considered the friendliest sheep breed. Valais Blacknose are docile, people-oriented, and genuinely enjoy human company, often greeting visitors like dogs. They are still livestock, though: they need pasture, shelter, sheep companions, and regular shearing and hoof care.
- Are Valais Blacknose sheep friendly with children?
- Valais Blacknose are famously gentle and tolerant, and well-handled animals are calm around respectful children. At Cloud Cap Valais, lambs are handled from birth, which builds the trusting, easygoing temperament families love.
- Can I keep just one Valais Blacknose as a pet?

- What do pet Valais Blacknose sheep need?
